APHRC Hiring Education And Technology Researcher

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is hiring an Education and Technology Researcher to lead and contribute to research on digital solutions in education, with a focus on responsible AI and technology use in African basic education.

What it offers

• A position based at APHRC’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, with occasional travel to project sites in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Appointment at one of four levels depending on experience: Postdoctoral (0–2 years after PhD), Associate Research Scientist (3–5 years), Research Scientist (6–11 years), or Senior Research Scientist (12+ years).

Who can apply

• A PhD in education and technology, machine learning in education, educational data science, curriculum and instruction with a focus on technology, or a related field.
• Proven experience conducting high-quality research on education, digital technology, and/or AI in a research institution.
• Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills; proficiency in data analysis software such as STATA, SPSS, R, Python, NVivo, or ATLAS.ti.
• Excellent scientific writing skills, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and successful grant proposals.
• Fluency in English is mandatory; proficiency in French is an added advantage.

What you'll do

• Lead or co-lead research studies on digital technologies and AI in African basic education.
• Strengthen APHRC’s knowledge base on responsible use and scaling of AI and educational technologies.
• Contribute to project management, policy engagement, and strategic planning.
• Secure funding through proposal development and maintain partnerships with stakeholders.
• Evaluate the efficacy, equity, and ethical implications of digital technology in low-resource environments.
• Synthesize research evidence to develop frameworks for integrating digital technology in education.
• Mentor young researchers and represent APHRC at national, regional, and international forums.
