CSIR-DSTI Inter-Programme Bursary Scheme 2027

The CSIR-DSTI Inter-Programme Bursary Scheme supports full-time Honours, 4th year Engineering/Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and PhD students at South African public universities.

What it offers

• Honours/fourth year engineering/Postgraduate Diploma: R160 000 per year
• Masters: R170 000 per year
• Doctorate: R180 000 per year
• Once-off laptop allowance: R10 000
• Additional benefits include:
  • Experimental costs funding of up to R35 000 per year
  • National and international conference attendance funding of up to R35 000 per year
  • Recognition of Top Performing students (CSIR Excellence Awards, certificates and gifts)
  • Possible work placement opportunities at CSIR and other affiliated organisations
  • Interview skills training for final year students
  • Opportunity to work on real-life projects with CSIR co-supervision
  • Onboarding session and meeting with the CSIR team
  • Psychosocial support (academic and psychological support)
  • Student wellness programme
  • Mentorship programme pairing with senior CSIR professionals
  • Research skills training workshops
  • Thesis/dissertation/research publications and printing costs funding
  • Vacation work opportunities of up to six weeks per year

Who can apply

• Students approved or registered for full-time studies at any South African public university
• Students intending to register or registered for Honours, 4th year Engineering/Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters or Doctorate degrees
• Degrees must align with specified thematic research areas (e.g., Biocatalysis, Biopharming, Health, ICT, Mining, Water Research)
