CSIR Bursary Programme 2027

The CSIR Bursary Programme 2027 provides full financial support for unemployed South African students pursuing priority fields in science, engineering, and technology.

What it offers

• For undergraduates and Honours: registration fees, tuition fees, books, accommodation, living allowances, and a once-off laptop allowance.
• For master’s and doctoral students: registration fees, tuition fees, living allowances, and a once-off laptop allowance.
• Additional benefits include CSIR Excellence Awards, work placement opportunities, interview skills training, mentorship, vacation work (up to six weeks per year), experimental costs funding (up to R35 000 per annum), conference attendance funding (up to R35 000 per annum), research skills training, publication funding, and symposium attendance.

Who can apply

• Current grade 12 learners: Must be a South African citizen, intend to enrol full-time at a South African public university, and have English (Level 5), Mathematics (Level 6), and Physical Science (Level 6).
• Current university students: Must be a South African citizen, planning to enrol full-time at a South African university for 2027, and have passed all registered courses.
• Master’s and doctoral applicants: Must be a South African citizen, have good scientific writing skills, excellent academic record, research drive, technical abilities, teamwork skills, and communication skills.

What you'll do

• Pursue qualifications in priority areas such as Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Geology, Computer Science, Data Science, Biology/Health Science, Biomedical Science, and more.
• For master’s and doctoral students, conduct research, meet deliverables, and produce reports or conference papers.

• Failure to attach required documents will render your application invalid.

• You must work back for every year of funding received.
