TWAS Doctoral Fellowship 2027

TWAS Doctoral Fellowship 2027 supports PhD research in developing-country host institutes for scientists from the global South.

What it offers

• Up to 160 fellowships per year across respected institutions in Brazil, China, India, Pakistan and South Africa.
• Duration: up to 4 years for most programmes; shorter terms (6–12 months) for sandwich options.

Who can apply

• Nationals of developing countries in the South.
• Minimum degree: MSc.
• Age limit: 35 years.
• Applicants may submit only one programme application per calendar year within the TWAS and OWSD portfolio.

What you'll do

• Pursue full-time doctoral research in natural or related applied sciences.
• Some programmes allow a sandwich option (research split between home and host institutions).

• Submit via the online portal once the call opens.
• Use the “Apply now” button on the programme page to start.
• Obtain a preliminary acceptance letter early; only letters dated the same year as the application are valid.
• Programme-specific opening and closing dates are listed on each programme page.

Good to know

• Deadline: 30 June 2026.
• You may apply to only one TWAS/OWSD programme per calendar year, with a limited exception for heads of institutions inviting Visiting Professors.
