HFG Foundation Young African Scholars Program

The Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards support emerging African scholars whose research focuses on violence in or related to the African continent.

What it offers

• Two-year fellowship for individual scholars.
• In-person methods workshop on the African continent.
• Fieldwork research grants of $10,000 each.
• Mentoring from senior African and Africanist scholars.
• Sponsorship at an international conference to present research findings.
• Editorial and publication assistance through a writing workshop.

Who can apply

• Applicants may be citizens of any country.
• Must be aged 45 or younger.
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited Ph.D. program at an African higher-education institution.
• Must be living on the African continent.

What you'll do

• Conduct research on aspects of violence in or directly related to the African continent.
• Participate in a research proposal workshop held on the African continent.
• Present research findings at an international conference.
• Prepare research for submission to international peer-reviewed journals and other outlets.

• Apply online annually between December 1 and March 1, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
• Create an account to access the application.
• Submit the required application materials as outlined in the guidelines.
• Final decisions are made by the Board of Directors.
• Applicants will be informed promptly by email of the Board’s decision.
