Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program builds a network of young leaders across Africa by funding education and transitions to work.

What it offers

• Financial support including tuition fees, accommodation, books and other academic materials
• Mentoring, counselling, leadership development
• A return air ticket to a Scholar’s country of origin when necessary
• Psychosocial and academic support throughout the academic journey and into work

Who can apply

• Young people from Africa and Indigenous youth in Canada
• Women and marginalized groups are especially encouraged

How to apply

• Apply through one of the partner universities or NGOs
• Each partner sets its own admission fees, application guidelines and timelines
• Research the program of your choice and contact the relevant institution for more information

Good to know

• The program provides scholarships at secondary, undergraduate, and master’s levels
• Scholarships are not currently available to PhD candidates
• Partner institutions are primarily in Africa, with additional partners in North and Central America, Europe, and the Middle East
• The program has committed over 58,000 scholarships and aims to enable 100,000 young people to access higher education by 2030
• 71% of Scholars are young women
• The program does not provide sponsorship or financial support outside of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
