Al Jazeera Fellowship Program for Journalists and Scholars

The Al Jazeera Fellowship offers journalists and researchers a structured opportunity to conduct in-depth research and gain practical experience within Al Jazeera Media Network.

What it offers

• A 3-month programme divided into two phases: remote research planning and in-person research at Al Jazeera Media Network Headquarters.
• Fellows must develop and submit a research paper of up to 7,000 words, following AJMI guidelines.
• Fellows will be embedded within Al Jazeera teams, meet with editors and journalists, and contribute to AJMN’s work culture.

Who can apply

• Full-time journalists or researchers (including freelancers) with at least four years of professional experience in journalism or research relevant to media/journalistic fields.
• Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree.
• Fluent in English (speaking and writing), with strong academic writing skills.
• The English-language fellowship is open only to applicants from non-Arab countries; Arab applicants may apply to the Arabic-language fellowship.

What you'll do

• Submit a research proposal (1,000–1,500 words) on one of several pre-defined topics, including journalism in the Global South, digital journalism, new schools in journalism, journalism ethics, or media institutions and challenges.
• Provide monthly progress reports during the fellowship.
• Actively engage with the Al Jazeera community and participate in its journalistic practices.

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Fellowship proposal (title, field of interest, objectives, methodology, abstract).
  • Three samples of work in English.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
• Applications missing any required document will not be considered.

Good to know

• The application period for English-speaking applicants runs from 4 November to 10 December 2025.
• Research proposals must be original, specific to the Al Jazeera Fellowship, and free of plagiarism.
• The Visiting Journalist Fellowship Programme is not currently open; it will be announced at a later date.
