The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship funds young African leaders to study in South Africa while taking part in a leadership development programme.

What it offers

• Comprehensive funding for core study costs, including:
  • Tuition and registration fees for a one-year Honours or two-year Masters degree at a recognised South African university
  • Study materials, research, and medical-aid allowances
  • Accommodation, meals, and a personal allowance
  • Economy-class flights to and from your home country at the start and end of your degree
• Allowances are paid twice yearly; tuition is paid directly to the institution and other allowances to you
• Residential leadership workshops during your studies

Who can apply

• Citizens of any African country
• Aged 19–29 in the year of applying
• By 1 January 2028, hold an undergraduate degree with academic results above 70% or upper-second class Honours
• Aspire to ethical leadership and advancing equality, freedom, and human dignity in Africa
• Prepared to reflect on your own leadership and undergo personal growth

How to apply

• Apply online via the Foundation’s application platform
• Upload essays and documents; three referees must upload recommendation letters directly
• All application materials, including references, must be uploaded by 14 April
• SAQA verification is not required to apply, but advised if shortlisted
